CARMEL VALLEY RESIDENCE
Project Type Single Family Residence
Location Carmel Valley, California
Project Size 3,500 SQ FT
Found at the foot of the Santa Lucia Mountains in Carmel Valley, this wood and stone residence received a sensitive renovation and addition. The project maintains its thoughtful Craftsman roots while embracing the rugged landscape beyond its doors.
Studio DeMaria focused on preserving the home’s original materiality and extended its warm palette of varied wood cladding, exposed wood structure, and river rock masonry into the new work. Abundant natural light fills the interiors throughout, highlighting textures that improve with age and use. Masonry laid by Justin DeMaria’s uncle more than sixty years ago remains a living thread in the project and grounds the design in legacy and local craft.
Inspired by this legacy in stonework, a generous stone patio now reaches out toward a broad grass field. It creates seamless indoor-outdoor living that embraces the surrounding vineyard and farmhouse setting. New landscape walls and a thoughtfully placed fireplace anchor the gathering spaces, while wood floors and wood shake roofing maintain the home’s tactile, enduring character. This blending of natural materials and native landscape merges the indoor and outdoor spaces and roots the project timelessly in place.
The result is a multi-acre estate that feels quintessentially Carmel Valley: eclectic yet cohesive, rugged yet refined. By respecting the past and introducing subtle new strokes, the residence now offers expanded comfort and bucolic connection for its owners. It represents a celebration of place, heritage, and the simple pleasures of rustic sun-drenched valley living.
